Is she pregnant?

Discovering your girlfriend or partner is facing an unplanned pregnancy can create many questions and fears. If you recently heard these words without expecting it, you may be feeling pretty unprepared and scared, whether or not you want to admit it. As a man, you may be thinking:

  • I don’t even know how to be a dad.
  • How do I support her in this pregnancy decision?
  • I really want to have this baby, but she is wanting an abortion. What do I do?
  • I do love her, but I’m not ready to be a dad.
  • What about my school and career?
  • This was just a one-time thing; I don’t even really know her.
  • We are not in a committed relationship; what if things between us don’t work out?

You are not alone in this situation. The two of you can get through this. She needs you now more than ever. It’s vitally important that you provide her with the support she needs – emotionally and physically.

At Hope’s Pathway Chatham, we recognize that an unplanned pregnancy disrupts a man’s plans, too. We have male coaches ready to offer support for men during this stressful and possibly confusing time. You are part of determining the next steps, and gathering all the facts is a good place to start.

We offer self-administered pregnancy testing and referrals for an ultrasound to confirm her pregnancy, and accurate information to help you both consider the possible consequences of all your pregnancy options.

As a man, what comes next?

Although the decision is ultimately up to her, knowing what you think about the pregnancy or the idea of being a dad can help her make a fully informed choice. It empowers her and you. Leave all your cards on the table. If you want to continue your relationship together – tell her. If you’re excited, nervous, or confident – tell her. She deserves to hear from you because she is making a decision that will impact your life, too.

Pregnancy is not just a women’s health issue. As a man, understanding your role and responsibility is critical. That’s why we have a Fatherhood program led by male coaches designed specifically to help you understand your choices and next steps. If you need to gather more information before you decide, that’s why we’re here. Give us a call today to make an appointment to talk. All calls and messages are confidential.
